First, it seems most firms are continuously evaluating ways to modify and extend their business models. ASO, MSP, PEO, RPO, VMS, VOP…No surprises here, given the entrepreneurial spirit of most staffing execs combined with the market pressure everyone has endured recently.

Second, the more innovative and entrepreneurial the firm is, the more frustrated they are with the inflexible internal IT decisions they have made. Many organizations made decisions a few years ago to catch the wave of hosted CRM and “rent” their applications, believing it would lower their IT burden and overall cost of ownership. What they discovered is that the “one-size-fits-all” limitations of this approach negated any potential savings.

Third, most of these organizations never achieved any cost savings because they had to seek out and bolt on a basket full of ancillary applications in an attempt to achieve a richer, more flexible solution. What they ended up with is a mess of disintegrated tools and widening gaps and seams between their business processes.

My recommendation: when making decisions regarding the application infrastructure for running your staffing firm, consider solutions that will align with your business plans and goals. Furthermore, when making these decisions, do not confuse SaaS with hosting; you can purchase a solution which is configured to address your unique business requirements, and still have it hosted to achieve IT cost savings.

If you have three people, direct hire only, serving one industry and no expansion plans, a simple CRM product rental will likely suit your needs.

If you have ten+ recruiters, recruit both contract and direct, serving multiple industries, with multiple offices and plans for either organic growth or M&A, you will need a much more flexible, configurable and integrated solution to support your dynamic environment. This solution selection decision is far more strategic and requires much more consideration, because the wrong decision will cost you far more than the face value of the contract, while the correct decision will pay dividends for years to come.
